Week Two - Introduction to AI

Having read Surfing the Tsunami last semester, I was interested to see what I would learn from reading it a second time. After reading Chapter 1, I was able to rediscover the basics of Artificial Intelligence. AI is already very prevalent in businesses, and it seems to be gaining more involvement as the years go on. It’s scary to think that even though artificial intelligence is a newer concept, that it could eventually be developed into mimicking human intelligence/experience. It makes me think about the future for business if computers replace humans in the workforce. 


When I first heard the term ‘artificial intelligence,’ I envisioned a human-like robot with a face and a body shaped like a human. After reading through chapter one, I realize that it’s more about machines taking on the tasks that humans would be doing at work. Automation in manufacturing is something that was frowned upon at first, but now it has simplified the process for many businesses and made mass production a lot more efficient. The creation of software and software robots has also simplified jobs that used to take a lot more time. It’s scary to think that these kinds of robots could be replacing jobs in our economy, but over time I think it is something that we will all adapt to.

Week 12 - Preparing for Hootsuite Certification

This week, I focused on going through the teachings in order to start preparing myself to take the Hootsuite certification exam. I have found the information they teach us to be very beneficial, and I think it will be useful for me in my future career. Being able to plan posts, see insights on social media posts, and keep tabs on all of my socials at once is a huge help. Keeping everything together makes it a lot easier to run multiple accounts. One thing I have learned from this course that I think is relevant and beneficial, is the idea of keeping the audience engaged. Businesses can advertise as much as they want, but if the audience is not engaging with their social media advertisements, they serve little to no purpose.  Since I have not taken the certification exam, I went through the steps of adding the certification without actually doing it. Week Two - Top Skills

LinkedIn’s job search feature has proven to be very useful - and is something that I am rather familiar with. I found the job post for my current internship through LinkedIn and was able to secure the spot. After searching for social media marketing jobs, I was surprised to see how many volunteer positions came up. The other jobs that were posted listed useful information such as salary or hourly range, if benefits were offered, and the location and company of the job. Many social media marketing jobs were looking for a bachelor’s degree plus a few years of experience in the field. LinkedIn also provides helpful features that allow you to narrow down the search by using different filters.  For the data from 2018 provided by CASA, I was interested to see what kind of skills were most sought after during that year. Week 13 - Freelancing

Being a social media manager was originally the career path I wanted to take after graduation. Creating content and analyzing engagement seemed like an aspect of business that would be super interesting. A social media manager, in my opinion, is vital to new businesses nowadays. Without an active social media presence, a lot of people don’t have any idea what your company is about. It allows you to be creative, while also providing valuable advertising to the business that would help them generate more customers, leading to more profit.  When I worked at an ice cream shop in high school, the owners asked me to help run their freshly created Tik Tok account. They paid me extra on top of the money that I was making regularly. I would have designated shifts where I would come in, just to create TikTok videos.
